Today She Flew to New York!

We had an early morning this morning when the phone rang at 5:45 am. Emily (Sister Smith) was on the other end, sounding bright, cheerful, and ready to take on the world. She excitedly told us all about how wonderful it was at the MTC, how much she loved it, all of the great people she met, and what she learned there. Her favorite thing was to sit by and/or talk to different missionaries with her companion at every event, including gym time, devotionals, meals, etc. The first question they would ask was: “So, where are you going?” They would then promptly ask them how to say various things in the language they were learning. She then told us how to say “hello,” “good-bye,” “how are you?,” “fine,” “thank you,” and “you’re welcome” in German, Russian, and one of the languages they use in the Philippines (she couldn’t remember the name of it and it’s not Tagalog).

She told us how much she has enjoyed the many dearelder.com letters she continues to get. As soon as we get the address of the apartment where she’ll be staying, I’ll post it on here so you can write her snail mail, if you’d like. You can also continue to write to her, using dearelder.com (but it will cost the price of a stamp) and her email address. She flew from SLC to Atlanta, Georgia, had a two hour layover, then flew to White Plains, NY. She told us that she will be spending the night at the mission home and then they will be assigned areas tomorrow. She thinks that pdays (preparation days) are on Mondays, so we might not hear from her until this coming Monday – unless the let her email tomorrow before they take off. If they do, I’ll post it on here right away!

The surprise of the day was when I received a text from an unknown number with a picture of her in the Atlanta airport (I think – at least it didn’t look like the SLC airport to me). It was from a flight attendant in the airport whose son is currently in the MTC. She told me that she knows how much it means to hear from her son and she was glad she was able to help a missionary and her loved ones smile. What a wonderful gift that was!!! We never know how our service will touch someone – no matter how small a thing we might think it to be.

Emily shared her testimony with us throughout the call this morning. She kept emphasizing how wonderful it was to be surrounded by the Spirit. She’s so excited to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ! She also talked about how wonderful it is to go to bed on time and wake up on time. She doesn’t fall asleep during the day any more, she isn’t tired when she wakes up, and she actually has time to lay in bed, contemplating the day, before falling asleep, rather than falling asleep while kneeling on the floor, on her bed, or half sitting up somewhere. Those who know her well know exactly what I’m talking about. 😉

I’m so glad that she has chosen this road in life. She is already blessing other people and we, as her family, are already feeling the blessings of her choice in our lives. She is such an example to me!
